RAY CHARLES’S DAUGHTER TO SING AND SPEAK ABOUT ADDICTION RECOVERY

It is a well-known fact that beloved blues singer songwriter, Ray Charles, struggled with heroin addiction early on in his career. He was able to overcome his addiction after a stay in rehab in the 60s, but it seems one of his daughter’s went through a similar struggle.
Sheila Raye Charles is one of the singer’s 12 children and she too went down the path of addiction for years before finally experiencing recovery. She is traveling to a number of venues including churches and prisons across the country to speak about her experiences with addiction while singing and performing some of Ray Charles’ music as well. Sheila is now living a more successful sober life after recovering from her issues of drug abuse.
A Difficult Childhood and Music Career
Ray Charles had children with nine different women and Sheila Raye was the seventh of twelve. Charles unfortunately, did not act as a father figure for Sheila who was not able to meet him until the age of 14. She was able to only speak with him on the phone for most of her childhood and discovered his lack of parenting skills when she finally met him in Los Angeles.
After that he would visit occasionally but she experienced the sense that his children were not a high priority in his life. In spite of her difficult childhood, Sheila began to pursue a music career as a singer and was even able to record her own songs in Ray Charles’ studio although the recordings were never released.
She struggled with her music career and eventually developed an addiction to crack cocaine that would land her in jail at age 39. Her addiction began in the 70s, after Ray Charles was able to beat his addiction to heroin, and she abused cocaine for 20 years before finally making the decision to become sober.
Low Points of Addiction
Sheila Raye Charles began getting heavily into crack cocaine after suffering from post-partum depression following the birth of her second child. The euphoria that she experienced while using cocaine helped her get through life and she found herself unable to quit.
Her addiction became so severe that she lost all five of her children either through giving them up for adoption or having them taken away because of her drug abuse. She was also arrested on three separate occasions but it was her last stay in prison that helped her to realize she wanted to quit.
She had a spiritual revelation in her cell as she believed God told her to speak about her issues around the world. Now Sheila Charles is involved in her tour that will take her to prisons and churches to discuss her addiction and how she was able to recover. She is doing her speaking engagements as volunteer work and merely asks for donations for gas or a hotel room.
After being told she was washed up by people in the music industry, Sheila is now grateful to be able to sing on her current tour and pay tribute to her father by performing his songs. She also gets the opportunity to share her stories of the ups and downs of addiction with her ultimate redemption. Her goal is to share her spirituality and her positive transformation to people who are also struggling with addiction or other personal problems.
Some of her events will be sponsored by faith-based organizations which help recovering drug addicts through spiritually-centered treatment for addiction. Sheila Charles is doing her part to support these programs and use her story as an inspiration for others to seek and help and recovery for their addiction problems.

Celebrity Doctor Oz Grilled In Congress: Green coffee No magic weight loss cure !

$

WASHINGTON (AP) — Under pressure from Congress, celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz on Tuesday offered to help "drain the swamp" of unscrupulous marketers using his name to peddle so-called miracle pills and cure-alls to millions of Americans desperate to lose weight.
Oz appeared before the Senate's consumer protection panel and was scolded by Chairman Claire McCaskill for claims he made about weight-loss aids on his TV show, "The Dr. Oz Show."
Oz, a Cardiothoracic surgeon, acknowledged that his language about green coffee and other supplements has been "flowery" and promised to publish a list of specific products he thinks can help America shed pounds and get healthy — beyond eating less and moving more. On his show, he never endorsed specific companies or brands but more generally praised some supplements as fat busters.
McCaskill took Oz to task for a 2012 show in which he proclaimed that green coffee extract was a "magic weight loss cure for every body type."
"I get that you do a lot of good on your show," McCaskill told Oz, "but I don't get why you need to say this stuff because you know it's not true."
Oz insisted he believes in the supplements he talks about on his show as short-term crutches,
and even has his family try them. But there's no long-term miracle pill out there without diet and exercise, he said.
“I actually do personally believe in the items I talk about on the show," he said. "I passionately study them. I recognize they don’t have the scientific muster to present as fact but nevertheless I would give my audience the advice I give my family all the time, and I have given my family these products. Specifically the ones you mentioned, then I’m comfortable with that part."
"The scientific community is almost monolithic against you in terms of the efficacy of the three products you called 'miracles,'" McCaskill said. "When you call a product a miracle, and it's something you can buy, and it's something that gives people false hope, I don't understand why you need to go there."
Within weeks of Oz's comments about green coffee — which refers to the unroasted seeds or beans of coffee — a Florida-based operation began marketing a dietary supplement called Pure Green Coffee, with claims that the chlorogenic acid found in the coffee beans could help people lose 17 pounds and cut body fat by 16 percent in 22 weeks.
The company, according to federal regulators, featured footage from "The Dr. Oz Show," to sell its supplement. Oz has no association with the company and received no money from sales.
Last month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the sellers behind Pure Green Coffee and accused them of making bogus claims and deceiving consumers.
The weight-loss industry is an area where consumers are particularly vulnerable to fraud, Mary Koelbel Engle, an associate director at the FTC, testified at the Senate hearing. She said the agency conducted a consumer survey in 2011 and found that more consumers were victims of fraudulent weight-loss products than of any of the other specific frauds covered in the survey.
Oz stressed during the hearing that he has never endorsed specific supplements or received
money from the sale of supplements. Nor has he allowed his image to be used in ads for supplements, he said.
"If you see my name, face or show in any type of ad, email, or other circumstance," Oz testified, "it's illegal"— and not anything he has endorsed.

Juneteenth; The Emancipation Proclamation

$

On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and his Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas heralding news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
That news came a little late—two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
But for many African Americans, Juneteenth has become the most celebrated day in American history.
It's a day to reflect on how far we've come, but it also reminds us of all that still needs to be done for race relations in this country.
The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.
"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."
The flag from Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861.

Certain foods became popular and subsequently synonymous with Juneteenth celebrations such as strawberry soda-pop. More traditional and just as popular was the barbecuing, through which Juneteenth participants could share in the spirit and aromas that their ancestors - the newly emancipated African Americans, would have experienced during their ceremonies. Hence, the barbecue pit is often established as the center of attention at Juneteenth celebrations.

Food was abundant because everyone prepared a special dish. Meats such as lamb, pork and beef which not available everyday were brought on this special occasion. A true Juneteenth celebrations left visitors well satisfied and with enough conversation to last until the next.

Official Juneteenth Poem
We Rose
From Africa’s heart, we rose
Already a people, our faces ebon, our bodies lean,
We rose
Skills of art, life, beauty and family
Crushed by forces we knew nothing of, we rose
Survive we must, we did,
We rose
We rose to be you, we rose to be me,
Above everything expected, we rose
To become the knowledge we never knew,
We rose
Dream, we did
Act we must.

‘Jersey Boys,’ Eastwood’s Take on Showbiz Myth

You’re Just

 Too Good to Be True

At the end of “Jersey Boys,” Clint Eastwood’s likable, resolutely laid-back adaptation of the Broadway musical, the actors all freeze.

“Jersey Boys” is a strange movie, and it’s a Clint Eastwood enterprise, both reasons to see it. For those with a love of doo-wop, it also provides a toe-tapping, ear-worming stroll down rock ’n’ roll memory lane that dovetails with that deeply cherished American song and dance about personal triumph over adversity through hard work, tough times and self-sacrifice. It’s a redemption narrative that’s got a good beat, and you can dance to it. No wonder it’s been such a popular trip: The stage version of “Jersey Boys” opened in 2005 on Broadway, where it’s still going strong, and has long been printing money around the world, from Australia to South Africa.

ABOUT THE FILM

From director Clint Eastwood comes the big-screen version of the Tony Award-winning musical “Jersey Boys.”

These classic hits are now being embraced by a new generation of fans through the stage musical, which has been running on Broadway for more than eight years and has also enjoyed successful tours around the globe.

Starring in the film, John Lloyd Young reprises his Tony Award-winning portrayal of the legendary lead singer of The Four Seasons, Frankie Valli. Erich Bergen stars as Bob Gaudio, who wrote or co-wrote all of the group’s biggest hits. Michael Lomenda and Vincent Piazza star respectively as Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, two original members of The Four Seasons. Oscar® winner Christopher Walken (“The Deer Hunter”) stars as mobster Gyp DeCarlo.

The film tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic rock group The Four Seasons. The story of their trials and triumphs are accompanied by the songs that influenced a generation, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Dawn,” “Rag Doll,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “Who Loves You,” and many more.

Oscar® winner Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) directed “Jersey Boys” from a screenplay and musical book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, song music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe. The film is produced by Eastwood, Graham King and Robert Lorenz, with Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tim Moore, Tim Headington, Brett Ratner, James Packer and Steven Mnuchin serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team was led by Oscar®-nominated director of photography Tom Stern (“Changeling”); Oscar®-nominated production designer James J. Murakami, (“Changeling”); Academy Award®-winning editor Joel Cox (“Unforgiven”) and editor Gary D. Roach; and costume designer Deborah Hopper.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a GK Films Production, a Malpaso Production, a Clint Eastwood Film, “Jersey Boys.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

This film has been rated R for language throughout.

The Finest Criminal Mugshot Ever ? Meeks' sexy mug shot goes viral.

$

Jeremy Ray Meeks police mug shot has caused thousands of women to throw their figurative underpants at the computer screen.
We’re having a moment..........
Here we were minding our business and scrolling through the days News timeline, when we came across the mugshot of an extremely handsome Steele blue-eyed man that (we’re ashamed to say) turned even our heads.
We haven’t seen a mugshot this fly since Porsha beat up Kenya on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion.
The thousands of social media admirers did not show up for Jeremy Ray Meeks’ arraignment. Instead, his friends and family were there, very upset about the attention he’s been getting over his infamous mugshot.

Those much talked about blue steel eyes were locked behind a heavy steel door last night at the San Joaquin County Jail. Friday afternoon, Meeks was arraigned on eleven felony counts related to firearm possession, street gang membership, and violating his probation.
Stockton Police said he’s not a good guy. Meeks is a convicted felon, having spent two years in prison for grand theft in 2002.

Jeremy had a chance to speak with an ABC affiliate in California, and while he admires the attention, he really just wants to get out of jail (no surprise there..). Check out the video below:

Meeks was arrested with four other men on June 18 during a joint law enforcement gang sweep. However, Meeks became a social-media sensation after Stockton Police posted his mugshot on the department’s Facebook. His mugshot went viral, with comments about his good looks and comparing the booking photo to a modeling headshot.
At his arraignment, Meeks friends and family were not amused by the social media attention. “It’s ridiculous,” said friend Rajanique Davis. “People are making jokes when this is not funny at all.”

Meeks is married with two young sons. His wife didn’t attend his arraignment.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t see her at all in the cameras, because she’s upset,” said friend Simone Johnson.

“She’s furious. Her man is in there and people are taking it as a joke, thinking it’s funny talking about his looks, saying all kinds of crazy things.”
Meeks’s younger brother doesn’t believe he is guilty and said he’s a changed man after prison.
“He’s a man who learns from his mistakes,” said Meeks’ brother Bryan Varela.
“With his past history, he got out of being incarcerated and put his mind on focus to his family and started doing what he had to do. Living the dream that he always wanted.”
Meeks’s public defender Sam Behar said he was shocked at the worldwide media attention for his client.
“It’s better than the attention my clients usually get,” said Behar.
Good looks may get you fame on Facebook, but justice is blind. Meeks’s bail was raised to one million dollars.
Meeks’s arraignment continues June 27 at 8:30 a.m.

LexCorp is built for Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice, simple and white

Another key landmark has been erected for the Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming release of ‘Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice’ film, the building is soon to be the epicenter of all evil from Lex Luthor, appearing for the first time in the series in this installment. It was confirmed earlier this year that Eisnenberg would play Luthor. At the time of the announcement director Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940.
What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

Eisenberg received Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA Award nominations for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network.” He also starred in Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love” and Louis Letterier’s “Now You See Me.” He next appears in “The Double” and “Night Moves.”

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Bill and Melinda Gates deliver a stirring address on optimism to Stanford University’s 2014 graduating class.

Bill and Melinda Gates share
the podium as the 2014
commencement speakers during
 the graduation ceremony
at Stanford University in Stanford,
Calif., on Sunday, June 15, 2014.
How do you inspire a group of unusually smart, hard working, optimistic, and largely privileged youngsters who are already destined for success? Encourage them to learn from those most in need; urge them confront inequity; exhort them channel their optimism with empathy; oh, and remind them that for all their accomplishments, they wouldn’t be where they are without a heavy dose of luck.

That was the message that philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates delivered to Stanford’s 2014 graduating class in a poignant commencement address.
At a time when inequality is becoming one of the central issues of our time, the Gates', whose foundation has become one of the most formidable philanthropic enterprises in history, exhorted graduates to pursue a mission-driven life. While both speakers were inspiring, it was Melinda Gates who delivered the most stirring lines. Here’s she is on channeling optimism:
Optimism for me isn't a passive expectation that things will get better; it’s a conviction that we can make things better—that whatever suffering we see, no matter how bad it is, we can help people if we don’t lose hope and we don’t look away.
Drawing from her own experience witnessing abject poverty, heartbreaking disease and the ravages and stigma of AIDS in India, she later added:
Let your heart break. It will change what you do with your optimism.
And here’s the bit about luck and why it’s important:
Bill worked incredibly hard and took risks and made sacrifices for success. But there is another essential ingredient of success, and that ingredient is luck—absolute and total luck.
When were you born? Who were your parents? Where did you grow up? None of us earned these things. They were given to us.
When we strip away our luck and privilege and consider where we’d be without them, it becomes easier to see someone who’s poor and sick and say “that could be me.” This is empathy; it tears down barriers and opens up new frontiers for optimism.
They briefly donned "nerd glasses" in solidarity with nerdy Stanford students.
So here is our appeal to you: As you leave Stanford, take your genius and your optimism and your empathy and go change the world in ways that will make millions of others optimistic as well.
The talk may well join another Stanford commencement address—the classic 2005 speech by Bill Gates’ longtime rival Steve Jobs—in the ranks of the most memorable ever. And it seemed especially apt for Stanford, a university that is minting innovators and entrepreneurs are an unprecedented rate. But not all successful Silicon Valley enterprises are created equal, or as the investor Peter Thiel famously bemoaned, “we wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters.” Stanford, for example, recently spawned the likes of Snapchat - disappearing messages—and Theranos—a potential revolution in healthcare. Both are successful and both are worth billions. But there’s little doubt as to which one Bill and Melinda Gates think Stanford graduates should join or try to emulate.
Get inspired and watch the full address (Gates’ begins at 1:10.50):

Kobe Bryant testing Apple's new iWatch?

A rumor suggests that Apple is testing the health and fitness capabilities of its new iWatch with famous athletes.
Is Apple about to play the celebrity game at a new, all-pro level?

Steve Jobs liked to court celebrities, but he did it quietly. He might give Sean Lennon a Mac, Bob Dylan an iPod or Barack Obama an iPad, but you wouldn’t hear about it from Apple.
That may be about to change. According to Mark Gurman, a young reporter at 9to5Mac who has broken more stories about Apple’s “iWatch” that the rest of the pack combined, Apple is teaming up with a raft of sports celebrities to test — and perhaps market — what the Street and the tech press expect will be Apple’s next big thing.
Gurman mentions in particular L.A. Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant, L.A. Kings right wing Dustin Brown and a player from the Boston Red Sox to be named later. Bryant was a key spokesperson for Nike, which is winding down its FuelBand business, and he was spotted last month on Apple’s Cupertino campus, where he reportedly met with Apple design chief Jony Ive.
In a similar vein, Jimmy Iovine, the well-connected music producer who came to Apple, along with Dr. Dre, as part of the $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics, spoke at an industry conference in late May about having music stars “curate” playlists on a new Apple streaming music service. Iovine knows a lot about cashing in on celebrity, something he did regularly at Beats, using exclusive tracks from the likes of Robin Thicke, Britany Spears and Wil.i.am to promote his company’s brand.
Is Apple getting ready to play the celebrity game at a new un-Jobsian level?
To be sure, Jobs was still in charge when Apple launched Ping, a short-lived music sharing service that courted celebrities and promoted their presence. But even a Lady Gaga playlist couldn't save Ping.
This sounds like something different — a game played for higher stakes, on TV and on billboards. The kind of game Iovine played in the music business and Angela Ahrendts played at Burberry.
Some will surely see it as an another sign that Apple has lost its way. Others will see it as evidence that Apple has matured and is ready to try things Steve Jobs never would.
We’ll find out soon enough if they can do it with class.

Kim and Kanye Celebrate North's First Birthday With a Big Bash!

North West's family spared no expense giving her a birthday party fit for a princess. Although North turned 1 in NYC on Father's Day, the family decided to celebrate with their friends and loved ones in LA this weekend.

The party took place in the backyard of Kourtney and Scott Disick’s new home in Calabasas.

Named Kidchella after Coachella, the popular music festival Kendall and Kylie Jenner attended earlier this year, the party was complete with a Ferris wheel, bouncy house, and mini performance stage. With all the attractions, the Saturday afternoon affair gave the social-media-friendly family several photo ops.

North’s birthday was officially on June 15, but with the big day falling on Father’s Day, the family kept the celebration in New York laid-back.

Teepees, food carts and a bounce house are seen on the massive lawn in another picture from Kris captioned, “View from the Ferris wheel!”

Kris Jenner posted a video in which daughters Kendall and Kylie are seen singing along to Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ as Jaden Smith, Kylie’s rumoured boyfriend, and other male friends dance on the mini stage.

the evening, perfectly summing up the 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Where to even begin? The Daytime Emmy Awards were already a questionable endeavor this year, given that the Academy couldn’t work out a deal in time for the telecast to air on a real TV network — therefore relegating the award ceremony to an online-only live stream for the first time in history.
Sheryl Underwood, left, and Sharon Osbourne present the
award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
We’ll cut to the chase: The entire thing was a top-to-bottom train wreck. From the horrifying red carpet show (which enlisted four “social media experts” to badger the stars about nothing remotely related to daytime TV) to lots of awkward pauses, empty teleprompters, colorful expletives and sexual innuendos during the actual ceremony, it was a complete hot mess.
It looked like a pretty no-frills affair: Just people presenting awards for 25 categories honoring daytime talk shows, entertainment news shows and soap operas, followed by acceptance speeches. Though that’s a recipe for snoozeville, so we’ll give the producers credit for something: The show was anything but boring. How could it be, with Sharon Osbourne talking about oral sex; “General Hospital” star Kelly Monaco offering to flash the audience; and host Kathy Griffin storming on stage during “The Young and the Restless” producer’s speech for winning Outstanding Drama Series and screaming “Wrap it up, lady!”

The crew of “Steve Harvey” accepts the award for Outstanding Talk Show Informative.

Eileen Davidson accepts the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “Days of Our Lives.”

Producer Linda Bell Blue poses in the press room with the award for Outstanding Entertainment News Program for “Entertainment Tonight.”

Rih covers Harpers Bazaar ARABIA

Rihanna looks incredible.

Rih covers the publication's June/July issue of Harpers Bazaar ARABIA, ushering in the era of New Modesty.

It is an age that's defined by elaborate beading, rich patterns, and hardly any skin showing. In the magazine — the Arabic satellite of Harper's Bazaar — the New Modesty human (their term, not ours) is adorned in crystal bodysuits and full-length garments made of silk.

There are headpieces that veil the face in glamorous mystery and beg the audience to wonder: Who is she? Yes, even a personality as loud and unapologetic as Rihanna can come across as elusive.

Harper’s Bazaar Arabia did well to avoid another controversy with its styling, opting for more covered and "demure" (for RiRi, at least) outfits and looks.

North Face jackets and a trusty pair of L.L. Bean boots are not part of the "New Modesty" aesthetic, according to Harper's Bazaar

This isn’t the first time Rihanna has played the modesty card. While on the international leg of her Diamonds World Tour in October of 2013, she held an impromptu Insta-shoot at a mosque.

Rih received a lot of flack for the images, with many arguing her shoot was disrespectful to the sanctity of the site. Harper’s Bazaar Arabia did well to avoid another controversy with its styling, opting for more covered and "demure" outfits and looks.

Instead of outright poaching a meaningful and culturally specific item like the niqāb like one particular celebrity, Rihanna's ornate head-wrap and coverings stay both true to the audience and the pop star.

As a part of a cover spread entitled "The New Modesty, Cover Up in Style," Rihanna put away some of her more sheer, gowns in favor of high necklines and low hemlines.

Rihanna hasn't put out any new material in over two years, but she doesn’t have to.
After all, It’s her image that people crave, in the end.

The Rihanna reign just won’t let up.

Beyonce performs onstage at her "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour 2013," on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
There's a reason why they call her Queen Bey.
Beyonce has seized the crown in Forbes Celebrity 100, the magazine reported Monday, bumping off Oprah Winfrey as the world’s most powerful celebrity.

Besides an estimated $115 million in annual revenue since last June, the ranking is a measure of media mentions, social media status and overall societal impact — and Beyonce rules.

It’s been a stellar year for the pop star who shocked the world by dropping a title album with no promotion, endorsed brands like H&M and Pepsi and ran her own fashion business. While she just wrapped up a 95-stop tour collecting $2.4 million a pop, according to Pollstar, she's on the move again this summer with her hubby, Jay-Z (No. 6 on Forbes’ list).

Oprah fell to No. 4 on the list after Beyonce, Lebron James and Dr. Dre. Ellen Degeneres, Floyd Mayweather, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Robert Downey Jr. round out the top 10.

Will Ferrell and Melissa McCarthy are among the 30 honorees selected to receive a star on Hollywood’s the Walk of Fame in 2015, the Walk of Fame Selection Committee announced last Thursday morning.
Jennifer Garner, Peter Jackson, Eugenio Derbez, Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Rudd and Christoph Waltz join funnyman Ferrell in those from the motion pictures category receiving stars.
Screenwriter and novelist Raymond Chandler, who died in 1959, and Batman creator Bob Kane, who died in 1998, will be given their stars posthumously.
From the television category, “The Simpsons” producer James L. Brooks, producer and director Ken Ehrlich, celebrity chef Bobby Flay, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies, “NCIS: Los Angeles” star Chris O’Donnell, “Big Bang Theory” genius Jim Parsons, former “Saturday Night Live” favorite Amy Poehler, talkshow host Kelly Ripa and “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara will receive stars for their work.
Songwriter and remixer Lukasz ‘Dr. Luke’ Gottwald, R&B funk music group Kool & The Gang, rapper Pitbull, Al Schmitt and producer-turned-singer Pharrell Williams will receive stars as well.
Kristin Chenoweth, Dick Gregory and Ennio Morricone were selected to receive stars for their live performances on stage or in the theatre.
Los Angeles radio host Larry Elder will also receive a star, being the only one from the radio category to do so. Snoopy, a childhood cartoon favorite, will even receive a star on the Walk for his memorable appearances in the “Peanuts” specials.
The Walk of Fame Selection Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce selected the honorees at a meeting held on June 16. Of these 30 ceremonies planned for the recipients, approximately 24 of them will be broadcasted to a worldwide audience.

How to Get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Pay a $30,000 sponsorship fee, for starters
since its launch in 1960, a who’s-who’s of who’s made it in American entertainment. But unlike, say, the Oscars or the Emmys, the standards for inclusion are kept under tight wraps. So what, exactly, does it take to get one of these coveted pink terrazzo marble stars?

1. Produce something iconic. -In theory, anyone can apply for a star—all it takes is mailing an application and a fee to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. But submissions won’t even be considered if the candidate isn’t accomplished. “It’s a tourist attraction,” says Martinez. “We want the tourists to come to Hollywood to see their favorite stars.” (And the people working behind-the-scenes to create their favorite entertainment, like directors, producers and Publicists'.) As Di Bona puts it, “A star lets [fans] say thanks. Thank you for making my life happier or better.”
More specifically, that means that star candidates have to be famous for at least five years, and have, as Di Bona puts it, “unchallengeable” expertise in what the Chamber deems a core entertainment category—television, movies, radio, live theatre and music. Reality and Internet stars are notably excluded. As one Chamber rep famously said about Kim Kardashian, “She needs to get a real acting job then come to us.”
2. Promise that you want one.
All star applications must include a written statement from the star candidate, confirming that a) they want a star and b) they will attend the unveiling ceremony if their application is accepted. That’s a main reason why A-listers like Julia Roberts and Dustin Hoffman don’t appear on the Walk of Fame—they’re not interested.
3. Raise $30,000.
All star applications carry a $30,000 sponsorship fee. Half goes to the Hollywood Historic Trust, which maintains the Walk of Fame. The rest funds the creation of the star itself—breaking up the blank existing square and replacing it with a new one, printing the replica plaque honorees can take home, hiring photographers, security, and anything else related to the ceremony.
Typically the recording label or movie studio will foot the bill. But in some cases, the money has been raised by stars’ devoted fans. “Liza Minnelli’s fan club raised money by showing her movies at somebody’s house and having bake sales,” “Dean Stockwell was into recycling, so his fans did it by recycling.”
4. Wow the selection committee.
Every June, a select group of Hollywood bigwigs meets to review sponsors’ applications—including, most crucially, the star biographies submitted by their personal managers. This is the place to tout key details about awards won, records sold, philanthropic work, and anything else that might sway opinions.
There are six members on the selection committee, all of whom are appointed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and can serve a maximum of two two-year terms. Stars’ applications are good for two years, but they can reapply as many times as they want.
5. Fight for prime real estate.
Historically, the most coveted star placement has been in front of Hollywood Boulevard’s Roosevelt Hotel (where Julio Iglesias, Meryl Streep, Holly Hunter, and Joan Rivers reside) and the Hollywood and Highland shopping center (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Susan Sarandon). Now that the Walk of Fame is so big, however, celebrities should consider themselves lucky to get a spot outside the W Hotel, which actually has enough room to accommodate large crowds.
Of course, most of these placements aren’t controlled by the stars themselves. It was Martinez, for example, who put Farrah Fawcett’s in front of George’s Hair Salon in 1995, “because she was so famous for her hair,” she says. Kiefer Sutherland’s, meanwhile, was placed at 7024 Hollywood Boulevard—a nod to his TV show 24. Roger Moore, also known as 007, has a star at 7007 Hollywood Boulevard.
But if a star is big enough, he or she may be able to make demands: Muhammad Ali, for example, did not want people stepping on his star, so it was placed on the wall of the Hollywood and Highland shopping center.
Oh, and Clint Eastwood, if you’re interested, a special place is being reserved for you. “There’s one spot left in front of the Chinese Theatre and we’re saving it,” says Martinez. “He’s been approved, but he never set a date [for the ceremony].”
6. Throw a massive party.
Each star is unveiled in a grand ceremony, attended by the stars’ fans and other celebrities. The events typically attract about 600 people—unless the candidate is a Latin music star or a boy-band member, whose fans turn out in droves. The one for mariachi singer Vicente Fernandez drew 4,000 people, the largest crowd ever. J-Lo’s was also on the higher end, boasting 1,100 attendees.
These days, Martinez regularly gets bombarded with emails, tweets, and phone calls from boy band fans—so much so that she’s designated a special “corner” for boy band stars on Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea and Sycamore Avenues.
7. Remain on your best behavior. (Or don’t!)
When Oscar-winner Marlon Brando came under fire for making anti-Semitic remarks about Jewish people in Hollywood, some said the Godfather actor did not deserve a star anymore. But the late Johnny Grant, former chairman of the Hollywood Walk of Fame committee and the honorary mayor of Tinseltown, argued that celebrities get stars solely on the basis of career merit. After all, as Grant put it (according to Martinez), if stars were pulled up every time a famous person said something stupid, “we would have no stars left.”

Why The Arsenio Hall Show Was Canceled

Arsenio Hall was supposed to spend the week of June 2 in New York City, touting the upcoming second season of his late-night talk show on The View, Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show and Late Show with David Letterman. Instead, he was in Los Angeles, packing up boxes, bidding adieu to his staff and sharing via social media his disappointment over his show's cancellation. "I dreamed that they picked up my show for Season 2, then changed their minds and canceled the show," he tweeted to Magic Johnson. "Had to be a dream." Indeed, despite renewing The Arsenio Hall Show in February, CBS Television Distribution surprised Hall and his staff at the end of May by reversing course and canceling the show.
Arsenio was on a scheduled break when the decision came down, which means Hall didn't get a chance to produce a farewell show. "Most of my team went on vacation after celebrating our 2nd year pick up...and returned to cancellation," he tweeted. Fans were dismayed, and Hall's exit strikes a blow for diversity in late night. "In my five years in the cast of a network comedy, Arsenio Hall and George Lopez were the only late night talk shows couches I was welcomed to," Community star Yvette Nicole Brown tweeted. What happened?
1. Arsenio was losing its time slots. Tribune Broadcasting was a partner in the show, but when even its flagship New York station, WPIX, moved Arsenio from 11 to 11:30, it was clear others would follow. The real blow came when CBS got word that one of the nation's largest local station operators, Sinclair Broadcast Group, was set to downgrade Arsenio out of the 11pm—midnight period. Insiders say CBS then crunched the numbers and realized advertising revenue would take a huge hit.
2. The audience just wasn't there. After opening strong, Arsenio dropped 60 percent in the key demo of viewers ages 18-49. "You can't be the fourth choice out there," a show insider says. CBS Television Distribution said in a statement, "While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue."
3. It needed a new showrunner. Executive producer Neal Kendall exited soon after the
show premiered and was never replaced; CBS executive Eric Pankowski ran things in the interim. The studio had planned to hire a showrunner with a strong comedy background, but execs opted not to spend the money necessary to bring in a new production team.
4. It was struggling creatively. Insiders always believed it would take at least a year for Hall to get comfortable. Arsenio made big waves with such episodes as the one devoted to Prince, but it struggled to book other big-name guests.
5. Failure is the nature of syndication. Syndicated shows are subject to the whims of stations that want quick results and have itchy trigger fingers. (WPIX wasted no time replacing Arsenio with Seinfeld repeats.) There's a reason there hasn't been a major syndicated late-night talk show in years. In a bit of irony, the most recent one that worked was the original Arsenio Hall Show, which was squeezed off the air in 1994, more than five years after its history-making launch. John Ferriter, Hall's current executive producer, tells us he's talking to Hall about what the host would like to do next, including whether to pursue a new home for his show. But for now, the Dog Pound is closed.

Burger King has yet another way to have it your way with the PROUD WHOPPER®

Burger King has yet another way to have it your way: a gay pride burger.

The Proud Whopper, as it's called, comes wrapped in a rainbow colored wrapper with this inscription: "We are all the same inside."

It will be sold through Thursday at one Burger King restaurant on San Francisco's Market Street, that was at the heart of the route for last weekend's 44th annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade.

Burger King on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. EST plans to post a two-minute video about the Proud Whopper on its YouTube channel.
"It showcases who we are as a brand," says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. "It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression."
The inspiration behind the unusual burger wrap and video, he says, is Burger King's localized efforts to put into motion actions that support its recently-tweaked slogan: "Be Your Way."
The move also demonstrates BK's desire to stay connected to its base of Millennial customers. Gay rights is an issue that reverberates strongly with many Millennials both inside and outside the U.S. Burger King also was a sponsor of San Francisco's gay pride parade. Machado says that's the first time Burger King has sponsored a gay pride parade in the U.S., though it may have sponsored some outside the country.
The downtown San Francisco Burger King sold "Proud Whoppers" last weekend, during the parade and also passed out some 50,000 rainbow Burger King crowns, that were worn by parade participants and spectators. The video, created by the Miami office of Burger King's ad agency David, captures customers discussing whether or not the burger, itself, is different. At $4.29 it costs the same as a conventional Whopper. And, indeed, customers ultimately discover the only difference is the rainbow wrap.
All Proud Whopper sandwich sales, Machado says, will be donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation for scholarships benefiting LGBT high school seniors graduating in spring 2015.
One gay rights activist says BK is doing the right thing. "Whenever a company comes out in support of gay people, it makes a difference," says Jordan Bach, a consultant to corporations on gay rights issues and a GLAAD media partner. "But when it's done right—when it's done with a campaign that shows the company understands diversity and really believes in the profound acceptance of other people—that sort of marketing can change minds and hearts at the deepest level."
The message inside the PROUD WHOPPER®
Sandwich wrapper, “we are all the same inside,” speaks volumes and truly showcases what it means to “BE YOUR WAY”.
The intent of the “BE YOUR WAY” global attitude is not to tell anyone how they should live, but rather aims to elevate
“HAVE IT YOUR WAY®” to an even more meaningful place.
For the moment, Burger King has no plans to broaden the promotion, Machado says, but notes, "we may consider something even bigger later on."
As for the wrappers, he says, they've already become collectibles. "Customers were folding the wrappers and taking them home with them," he says. Pretty soon, he says, they'll probably show up on eBay!

Buzz around the World Cup is still going strong, underscored by two soccer-themed spots from Nike on this week’s Adweeks top 10 chart.
Nike’s "The Last Game" claimed the No. 1 spot this week with 52.5 million YouTube views and 324,000 likes. The spot was shared 274,000 times on Facebook and includes 82,600 Tweets. Nike’s other World Cup spot that debuted in May was the No. 7 video on the week’s chart with 81.1 million YouTube views and 426,000 likes. On Facebook, the spot has generated 286,000 shares and 484,000 likes.

Both spots feature several of Nike’s World Cup sponsorships of big-name players like Christian Ronaldo, Brazil’s Neymar da Silva Júnior and England’s Wayne Rooney.
Interestingly, competitor Adidas (who some speculate Nike may be overshadowing on World Cup social chatter) did not make the top 10 videos this week.
Similar to past few weeks, World Cup mania continues to dominate the chart with five soccer-related videos.
Only three videos on the chart were also pushed with digital ads, indicating that marketers got a significant amount of organic views last week.
The interactive chart below lets readers watch this week’s videos and look at how many views, likes, Facebook shares and comments each spot generated.
NOTE: Adweek's VideoWatch Chart, powered by VidIQ, reveals the Top 10 Branded Web Videos on YouTube every week. The chart tracks more than just pure views, as VidIQ incorporates sharing data from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, among other data sources, in an effort to measure true engagement. Tyler Perry -vs- Kimberly Kearney 'What Would Jesus Do' Trademark Battle

His opponent at the Trademark Office was a reality TV star who registered first and claimed she had introduced him to the title of a proposed show. She still lost.

While not scripture of ecclesiastic precept, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has declared Tyler Perry to be the winner in a battle over "What Would Jesus Do." The other contestant in this bout was Kimberly Kearney, who was once known as "Poprah" on the VH-1 series, I Want to Work for Diddy
In May 2008, Perry registered the mark in the category of entertainment services, mentioning in his filing, live concerts, a TV program and motion pictures. He included a disclaimer that he wasn't attempting ownership on the exclusive right to use "Jesus" apart from "What Would Jesus Do."
However, months earlier, Kearney had already filed for that same mark for a reality based television program.
When her "What Would Jesus Do" mark was then published for opposition two years later, Tyler Perry Studios stepped forward to cancel it. Although Kearney had included in her registration a print-out of a web page calling out for auditions on her show, Perry's reps said that she wasn't really using the mark. Perry demanded that the Trademark Office declare her registration abandoned as it was blocking his own attempts to turf out "What Would Jesus Do."
In subsequent papers at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Kearney attempted to make the case that she first used the mark in November 2007, and during the initial stage of production, she "shared her television program and title with Tyler Perry Studios" and that "not many months after sharing this program and soliciting [Perry] for financial support of this program, [Perry] filed to register this mark; consequently, eventually resulting in this cancellation proceeding."
But that hardly mattered thanks to some trademark jujitsu on the part of Perry's attorneys.
They requested the admission of certain facts by Kearney -- that she admit she hadn't produced a television show in connection with "What Would Jesus Do," that she hadn't sold one, that she didn't intend to do so nor had taken any meetings for such a show.
"Because [Kearney] did not timely answer [Perry]’s Requests for Admission the facts included are deemed admitted and are 'conclusively established,'" wrote administrative judges in an opinion cancelling Kearney's trademark that was handed down last month and has just been promulgated. "Despite Respondent’s denials in her answer to [Perry's] petition, the deemed admissions supersede those denials and we are bound by them."
The judges also note Kearney's claims that Perry stole her "What Would Jesus Do" idea,
but says that even if it was enough to support use or be a defense of unclean hands, "these allegations are unsupported and we may not adduce any facts from them."
If Tyler Perry does something with "What Would Jesus Do" -- and as illustrated here,
he's under some onus to actually use it in commerce lest he also abandon the mark --
this is the back-story behind it.

Nick Cannon; Hoping To Play Richard Pryor In A Biopic

Is it so he can play Richard Pryor in an upcoming biopic?

It hasn’t been confirmed just yet but a few strong clues have revealed that actor Nick Cannon may be taking on the role as legendary comedian Richard Pryor soon.

Specifically, a recent interview found Cannon dancing around the possibility in a way that coyly acknowledges the rumors while also saying absolutely nothing.

For the past week, Nick has been on Instagram posting vintage black and white shots of Richard.
This is a coveted role and you can be sure his estate and family take it very seriously.

"So all I’ll say is that I’m doing the work right now. I’m doing everything that I need to do to embody it when the opportunity is right."

So he's preparing for an audition? Or is he preparing for a role?  Is this still the project being backed by The Weinstein Company and producer Forest Whitaker, the one that might put Lee Daniels in the director's chair? Of course, that probably has to do with the standup material, or the public side of Richard Pryor. The private Pryor, the one battling demons and drug addiction, is going to be where the meat of the film really is.
Cannon's been making money hand-over-fist as the host of America's Got Talent, as well as chairman of TeenNick at Nickelodeon. The Pryor gig suggests a fire burns in the husband of Mariah Carey to respect Pryor and push his own talent in dark, intense material. But can Cannon, who has had a blessed show business existence, find the darkness inside Pryor?
“I’m doing the work; I’m working right now;” Cannon told MTV News, without fully confirming that he’s been cast in the film. “The movie is not in production. Let’s just say that.”
Earlier this year, Lee Daniels was in talks to direct a biopic on the late comedy great. Though details on the movie are still thin, Cannon feels confident that he’s the right man for the role.
“I started in standup doing Richard Pryor’s material in church,” he recalled, adding that his father, a preacher, was a fan. “That was one of my first impressions that I ever knew how to do, is Richard Pryor, at like 11, 12.”
However,  the late comedian’s children think Marlon Wayans, not Cannon, should play their father.
But that kind of doubt is why Cannon is “doing the work.” But what exactly does that mean?
“Now that I am doing a lot of the research, and actually digging really deep and trying to find every piece of work that he ever laid his hands on, it’s like, ‘Oh, this is stuff that’s kind of already in me,’ ” the “Wild N Out” host explained. “Just as an actor, man, it’s things that you do to actually embody something, and figuring out people’s mannerisms…I’ve read every piece of material, every book. And you understand that he’s definitely a complex individual.”
And since Pryor had such an influence on Cannon — who has branched out from standup to acting, hosting TV shows, and now directing, with his new film, “School Dance,” out this week — he wants to the one to honor him.
“To leave such a legacy, and such an enormous body of work, is to be commended, and his story needs to be told the right way. However it comes out, I know they’ll do it the right way.”

Andre 3000 Nails Jimi Hendrix in 'All Is By My Side'

XLrator Media has released the first trailer for “Jimi: All Is by My Side ”

Andre 3000 (real name Andre Benjamin) portrays Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming biopic Jimi: All Is By My
Side, and we have the new trailer!
Written and directed by Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), the movie covers one year in Hendrix's life -- 1966-67. In this period, Hendrix goes from an unknown backup guitarist at New York's Cheetah Club to a rock legend after making his mark in London's music scene. Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Andrew Buckley and Ruth Negga also star.

All Is By My Side opens September 26.

BUT........'Scuse me while I defend my guy

Jimi Hendrix's former girlfriend has slammed a new biopic detailing the life of the rock legend which contains scenes of brutal domestic violence which she says are 'completely made up'.

The new biographical film, Jimi: All Is By My Side, which depicts Jimi Hendrix's rise to fame, will premiere in Sydney this Thursday. But Kathy Etchingham, Hendrix's former girlfriend who lives in Melbourne, has already savaged the film, even going so far as to consider legal action against the creators.

Ms Etchingham, who dated the music legend between 1966 and 1969, is disturbed by the film's portrayal of the former couple's relationship as a highly abusive one.

The now retired real estate agent met Hendrix at a club when she was a 20-year-old DJ and he was 23. His song, The Wind Cries Mary, was written for her.
The film, which is set to be released on Thursday at the Sydney Film Festival, includes one scene where Hendrix is seen beating up Ms Etchingham.

She denied the depiction of their relationship as abusive, instead describing it as a fun time in her life. She said she remembered Hendrix as a gentle and entertaining person.
'If it's that bad, I've got no choice,' she said regarding her decision to take legal action. 'If I don't, it'll just get repeated and repeated and it'll become the truth.'

Roger Mayer, one of Hendrix's close friends, has also slammed the movie's depiction of Ms Etchingham and Hendrix's relationship.

'It seems these naughty filmmakers haven't researched anything properly,' he told Variety.

The biopic, written and directed by the award winning writer of 12 Years A Slave, John Ridley, also failed to consult Ms Etchingham before portraying her in the film.
With Hendrix being played by Andre Benjamin, better known as Andre 3000 from the band Outkast, Ms Etchingham is depicted by Hayley Atwell from the blockbuster Captain America.
Explaining how her portrayal was completely inaccurate, Ms Etchingham said the film even got her background completely wrong.

'Firstly, I am not from Manchester. I am actually Irish … my father's family were prosperous Irish landowners and owned property in Dublin and Wexford. They could not be described as working-class,' she said, discrediting the characteristics the film portrays her with.

'I am not prone to swear all the time. I was not a 'wild child' like other 'rock chicks.' My friends used to tell me how sensible I was.'

Initially, she had contacted the writer and director to offer her help for no cost.
But after hearing nothing in return, she sent a legal letter in regards to her portrayal.
'They sent me a horrible letter back threatening me with legal action under their First Amendment rights to say what they like about me. They said we thoroughly research all living people. My lawyer wrote back and said "if you thoroughly researched them, you didn't actually speak to Kathy".'

Ms Etchingham who is yet to see the film, found out about the scene from a friend who watched the film's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as from subsequent reviews.

She plans to attend the premiere, before deciding to launch legal action to block the film being released in Australia.

Aside from what she claims is an inarticulate portrayal of Hendrix' life, she is particularly concerned about the use of domestic violence as a source of entertainment.
