 — Tracy Morgan has sued Wal-Mart over last month's highway crash that seriously injured him and killed a fellow comedian.

Wal-Mart driver Kevin Roper allegedly plowed into a limousine van carrying Morgan on June 7, and Morgan and others injured in the accident allege negligence on Wal-Mart's part in a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in New Jersey.
"Wal-Mart was careless and negligent in the ownership and operation of its motor vehicle, which caused Mr. Morgan to suffer severe personal injuries,” the complaint reads. “As a direct and proximate result of said collision, Mr. Morgan was caused to sustain severe painful bodily injuries, including but not limited to multiple fractures which required multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment and will require significant physical rehabilitation.”
Plaintiffs include Krista Millea, the wife of late comedian James McNair, who died in the accident, as well as Morgan's assistant, Jeffrey Millea, and comedian Ardie Fuqua. The plaintiffs are suing for negligence, and in addition, Millea is suing for loss of consortium.
They are seeking compensatory and statutory damages, punitive damages, legal fees, as well as pre and post-post judgment interest, among other things at a trial by jury.
Wal-Mart expressed its sorrow over the accident in a statement.
"This has been a terrible tragedy. We wish Mr. Morgan, Mr. Fuqua Jr., and Mr. Millea full recoveries," the statement reads. "Our thoughts continue to go out to them, their families and friends, as well as to the families and friends of everyone involved, including Mr. McNair who lost his life. We are deeply sorry that one of our trucks was involved. As we’ve said, we’re cooperating fully in the ongoing investigation. We know it will take some time to resolve all of the remaining issues as a result of the accident, but we’re committed to doing the right thing for all involved."
The suit alleges that Roper was fatigued when the accident occurred, and that "Wal-Mart knew, or should have known" that he had been "awake for more than 24 consecutive hours" ahead of the crash. According to the suit, Roper had commuted 700 miles from his home in Jonesboro, Ga. to a Wal-Mart facility in Smyrna, Del., before beginning his shift.
"Additionally, there were many Wal-Mart distribution facilities closer to Mr. Roper's home — including nine in Georgia alone — which would have significantly reduced Mr. Ropers commute to work," the suit reads.
It says Wal-Mart either "knew or should have known" that it was "unreasonable" for Roper to drive 700 miles before his shift. The suit also alleges Roper fell asleep at the wheel immediately before the crash as a result of his fatigue. It goes on to say Wal-Mart turns a blind eye to workers who break regulations regarding shift limits set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
"Wal-Mart not only failed to condemn, but condoned this practice of its drivers routinely violating the F.M.S.C.A. Regulations," the suit reads.
Roper was going 65 mph in a 45-mph zone just before the accident, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report. Roper has plead not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges.
Morgan left the hospital on June 20 and was moved to a rehabilitation facility.
ace death by auto and assault by auto charges.
A message seeking comment from Wal-Mart was not immediately returned Saturday. An email seeking comment from Morgan's publicist was not immediately answered.

Is This The New African-American Barbie?

$

"Mattel, Inc., which owns the Barbie brand, said Monday the doll whose image is being circulated on the Internet was not made or sold by them."
An image of an African-American Barbie look-alike is being circulated on
the Internet, giving rise to the speculation that it's the next African-American Barbie.
The doll has blonde hair and gold chains, and sports not one but two bags monogrammed with the Louis Vuitton insignia.
It also wears a brown cowl-necked top that shows more than a hint of cleavage. The image has sparked outrage on the Internet, with many finding it offensive.
An Internet newspaper for young Nigerians, said that the doll strongly resembled "imagery of African-American women that is seen in some of the most famous celebrities," such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.
"Is this the true essence of our beauty and how America perceives the black woman?" the station asked under a picture of the doll.
Mattel told MSN on Monday that the doll “is not a Barbie doll and is not created or sold by Mattel.”   It’s still not clear where the image originated, but it was found it on the Facebook page of R&B radio station WBLS 107.5 .
The post has generated more than 1,730 comments so far.
"Looks like Nicki Minaj. But it is offensive with stereotypes of dyed hair, designer purses, and gold chains," wrote a face booker.
Others defended the doll.
"I don't find this Barbie offensive," wrote another. "I think the doll is pretty and represents how a lot of black women carry themselves today. I'm so sick of everything being turned into a racial debate."
There’s plenty of black Barbies out there, but there is NOT a new black Barbie available from Mattel with a stripper-look that shows a bit of cleavage.…at least that’s what many think.
The doll has a Nicki Minaj-ish look to her with bronze skin and golden blond hair, gold necklaces around her neck, toting Louis Vuitton’s monogram multi-color collection.
So for all of you who are in an uproar over the doll, it may very well be a Nicki Minaj doll that is set to come out soon.  But rest knowing that Mattel isn’t putting out it’s latest African American Barbie stripper line.

Jordan Brand Rolls out 'RE2PECT';

a Tribute for Derek Jeter...

Jordan Brand released a new, star-studded tribute today to pay homage to Derek Jeter, one of the company’s longest sponsored athletes.
Titled “RE2PECT,” the spot shows a veritable army of athletes, coaches and pop culture icons tipping their caps to the 40-year-old New York Yankee, who will retire this year after wrapping up his 20th season in the MLB.
Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Jay Z are just a few of the many familiar faces paying tribute to the Yankees captain in the ad. Phil Jackson, Jeanie Buss, Carmelo Anthony and Billy Crystal also show their respect in the video, which is guaranteed to leave more than one Yankees fan misty-eyed.
The best part of this ad might be the grudging acknowledgements of
Jeter’s success. Boston bros with no love for the Yankees tip their hats, and Mr. Met might have to go into witness protection after doffing his cap for Jeter.
It’s a moving tribute for a guy who made it through baseball’s most turbulent era without an arrest or a PED scandal. This is Nike’s official salute to Jeter, whose legacy with the company is second only to its titular namesake.
Jeter became the first Jordan Brand-endorsed baseball player after signing with the company in 1999. He has 12 signature cleats to his name—more shoes than any other athlete besides Jordan, per Nike's official site.
The ad will make its television debut Tuesday night, during Jeter’s final All-Star Game.

The First Black Woman To Win Olympic Gold Has Died

Alice Coachman, who became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she captured the high jump for the United States at the 1948 London Games, died on Monday in Albany, Ga. She was 90.
Her daughter, Evelyn Jones, said she had been treated at a nursing home for a stroke in recent months and went into cardiac arrest after being transferred to a hospital on Monday with breathing difficulties.
Coachman (who was later known as Alice Coachman Davis) received her medal from King George VI. She was invited aboard a British Royal yacht, she was congratulated by President Harry S. Truman at the White House, and Count
Basie gave a party for her. She was lauded in a motorcade that wound its way through Georgia from Atlanta to her hometown, Albany.

But she had returned to a segregated South. Blacks and whites were seated separately in the Albany city auditorium when she was honored there. The mayor sat on the stage with her but would not shake her hand, and she had to leave by a side door.

As a youngster in Albany, she had run and jumped barefoot, using ropes and sticks for makeshift high jumps. She had not been allowed to train at athletic fields with whites.
“You had to run up and down the red roads and the dirt roads,” Coachman told The Kansas City Star. “You went out there in the fields, where there was a lot of grass and no track. No nothing.”
At a time when there were few high-profile black athletes beyond Jackie Robinson and Joe Louis, Coachman became a pioneer. She led the way for female African-American Olympic track stars like Wilma Rudolph, Evelyn Ashford, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
“I made a difference among the blacks, being one of the leaders,” she told The New York Times in 1996. “If I had gone to the Games and failed, there wouldn't be anyone to follow in my footsteps. It encouraged the rest of the women to work harder and fight harder.”
Alice Marie Coachman, one of 10 children, was born in Albany on Nov. 9, 1923, to Fred and Evelyn Coachman. She ran track and played baseball and softball with the boys when she was young, but her father, a plasterer, was angered by her refusal to be ladylike and sometimes whipped her for pursuing athletics.
She saw little prospect of an athletic career and thought of becoming a musician or a dancer, having been enthralled by the saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and by Shirley Temple. But she was encouraged by a fifth-grade teacher and an aunt to continue in sports, and she came to the attention of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama while competing for her high school track and field team in Albany.
Coachman moved to Tuskegee and competed for the institute’s high school and college teams and later for Albany State College (now Albany State University). She captured the Amateur Athletic Union high jump championship 10 consecutive times, from 1939 to 1948, and the union’s 50-meter outdoor title from 1943 to 1947. She also won national championships in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay.
wait until 1948 to compete in the Olympics; the 1940 and 1944 Games were canceled because of World War II. On a rainy afternoon at Wembley Stadium in London in August 1948, she vied for gold in the high jump with Dorothy Tyler of Britain. They both cleared 5 feet 6 1/8 inches, but Coachman won because she did it on her first try. Micheline Ostermeyer of France was third.
Coachman, the only American woman to win gold in track and field at the London Games, remembered the moment long afterward.
“I saw it on the board, ‘A. Coachman, U.S.A., Number One,’ ” she told NPR. “I went on, stood up there, and they started playing the national anthem. It was wonderful to hear.”
Coachman’s track and field career ended with the 1948 Olympics, when she was 24. She raised a family, became an elementary and high school teacher, and created the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation to aid young athletes and former competitors in financial need.
She is survived by her daughter and a son, Richmond, from her first marriage, to N. F. Davis, which ended in divorce; a sister, Dicena Rambo; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Her second husband, Frank Davis, died about five years ago, her daughter said.
Coachman was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. There is an Alice Coachman Elementary School in Albany.
Coachman faded from public view after the 1948 Olympics, but her pride remained undiminished.
“Go anyplace and people will tell you Wilma Rudolph was the first black woman to win a medal — it’s not true,” she said in an interview with The Birmingham News in 1997, referring to Rudolph’s three gold medals in the sprints at the Rome Olympics. “She came on the scene 12 years later. But she was on television.”

Blues guitarist Johnny Winter dies at 70.

Johnny Winter, a Texas-bred guitarist and singer who was a mainstay of the blues-rock world since the 1960s, died on Wednesday in his hotel room in Zurich. He was 70 and had been on tour in Europe.

He was one of the world's finest guitarists," his rep. Lori Haynes, said. Winter was in Zurich, Switzerland, as part of a tour of Europe, although he was scheduled to return to the United States for shows later in July.

Winter first gained national attention when Rolling Stone magazine featured the the Texas music scene in a December 1968 cover story. It captioned his photo: "Johnny Winter, Albino Bluesman." The article said guitarist Mike Bloomfield considered the young Winter the "best white blues guitarist he had ever heard."

Rolling Stone now ranks Winter 63rd on its list of 100 greatest guitarists. Winter announced this year that he had another album ready for release in September. "Step Back" will include contributions from guests including Eric Clapton, Joe Perry and Dr. John, according to his official website.

His summer tour schedule was filled with shows, including 15 concerts planned across the United States in August.

Winter was asked in the documentary if he every dreamed that playing a guitar would take him around the world.

"I was almost always sure it would," Winter said. "I was sure I was going to be successful.

"It's the only thing that I've really been good at."

Winter opened up about his heroin, prescription pill and alcohol addictions that derailed his career in the 1980s and 1990s in an authorized biography "Raisin' Cain - The Wild and Raucous Story of Johnny Winter," published in 2010.

His resurgence began after he fired a longtime manager in 2005 and hired fellow musician Paul Nelson to guide his career.

"I think that Johnny now is really coming back to being himself," brother Edgar Winter said in the just-released documentary.

Bad news, Gladiators

Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind shows like "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy," just revealed a bit of her endgame when it comes to Olivea Pope & Associates and it doesn't go past Season 8. The showrunner spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about plans for the upcoming season of the show and admitted she doesn't see too many years left for Olivia, Fitz and the rest of the crew.
"I think there's only so much 'Scandal' you can tell satisfactorily," Rhimes said. "The Fitz-Liv thing can only be told so long and in such a way. It's not a 10-season or eight-season show. I've already decided how long that is and what that's going to be."
Honestly, it's not too surprising that Rhimes has already forged the ending for her political drama. Last season's final episode saw Olivia flying off into the sunset with Jake, Harrison meeting his end at the hands of daddy Pope and Fitz being re-elected for a second term in office. Unless the show decides to change the Constitution of the United States and let Fitz remain as POTUS past another four years, an early ending, at least when it comes to that part of the series, seems likely. But Rhimes also revealed the decision on when to pull the plug doesn't hinge on Fitz completing his time as president.
Although fans would no doubt love to see Olivia and her married man finally get their happily-ever-after complete with that house in Vermont, Rhimes says, while it would be interesting to continue following the couple once the politicking ends, she's already set boundaries for the show's time-frame and she intends on sticking to them. "I've given myself a parameter of what that is," Rhimes said when asked if the end of Fitz's time in office meant the end of the series. "Whether or not that means we end up deciding to stretch or shrink his presidency based on that remains to be seen."
What fans can expect to see when Season 4 returns this fall is more Kerry Washington and more drama. Rhimes admitted Washington's pregnancy contributed to less screen time for the actress and was the reason Season 3 seemed jam-packed with multiple characters and confusing storylines. When the newest season debuts, the spotlight will once again be on the remaining core cast members.

"As we're telling stories, the stories really do seem to be more focused on our core people," Rhimes said. "We're very excited to get back to Olivia-centric storytelling."

Aldon Smith Sentenced For Weapon And DUI Charges; Won’t Serve Jail Time

 -- unless he screws up
"I would like to apologize for my actions and let you know I will follow any orders you give me,"

SAN JOSE -- In a boon to 49ers fans and the franchise, a judge Friday sentenced an apologetic Aldon Smith to probation for three years rather than to jail for drunken driving and possession of three assault rifles.
But the star linebacker must serve 11 days on a work crew -- most likely cleaning up freeways -- and pay a $2,000 fine. And if he violates any of the conditions of probation -- which include not drinking alcohol or even going to a liquor store -- Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Daniel Nishigaya said he will immediately put him in jail for an undetermined amount of time.

"I would like to apologize for my actions and let you know I will follow any orders you give me," Smith told the judge in a courtroom packed with reporters.

San Francisco 49er Aldon Smith leaves a Santa Clara County Superior courtroom after pleading no contest to weapons and DUI charges Wednesday afternoon, May
San Francisco 49er Aldon Smith leaves a Santa Clara County Superior courtroom after pleading no contest to weapons and DUI charges Wednesday afternoon, May 21, 2014, in San Jose, Calif. He will be sentenced on July 25.
The sentence came after Smith pleaded  no-contest in May to misdemeanor  drunken driving and three felony counts  of possessing illegal assault rifles. The  judge said he reduced the felony gun  charges to misdemeanors, as is fairly  common, because Smith demonstrated  "poor judgment,""irresponsible  behavior" and "at times recklessness" but "no devious criminal plan." Smith has no criminal record of violence, the judge added.

Smith also could be facing discipline from the NFL for his off-field incidents. He's allowed to report to training camp when the 49ers report Wednesday.

"We are pleased that Aldon has moved past this phase of the process, and will support any action the NFL may take with respect to this matter," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "The organization will continue to support Aldon's efforts to grow personally from this experience."

Most suspensions for personal-conduct violations have ranged between one and eight games since Roger Goodell became commissioner in 2006. An eight-game suspension was given to then-Cincinnati Bengals wideout and repeat offender
Chris Henry in 2007, as a result of gun and DUI charges. First-time offenders, which Smith might be, drew one- and three-game suspensions after gun or drunken driving incidents.

Both the judge and prosecutor Brian Buckelew stressed that Smith received no special treatment because of his celebrity status. In fact, the conditions of probation, including banning Smith from possessing any guns or ammunition and subjecting him to search and seizure at any time by law enforcement, are tougher than usual.

Smith purchased the guns in Arizona, where they were legal, the judge noted. Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies discovered them after a house party Smith and his roommate hosted in June 2012, during which uninvited gang members stabbed the linebacker and shot two others. Smith cooperated fully with the deputies, allowing them to search without a warrant and helped them convict the man who stabbed him. Smith also never tried to say the guns were someone else's.
Regarding the drunken driving charge, Smith's lawyer Josh Bentley noted that Smith spent five weeks in an "intensive," inpatient rehab program.
However, prosecutor Buckelew noted outside court that in mid-April, according to police reports, Smith appeared to be quite inebriated when he was arrested on suspicion of making a false bomb threat at Los Angeles airport. Los Angeles prosecutors wound up deciding not to charge him.
"The greatest danger is his continuing use and misuse of alcohol," Buckelew said.
Smith must report to the work crews on Mondays, starting July 28. But the judge indicated he would be willing to allow Smith to change that schedule, as he would any other defendant, if he gives the court notice.
Late Friday, Smith issued a statement thanking his friends and family "through this difficult time" and vowing to stay on the straight and narrow. "I have learned a great deal and have worked very hard to become a stronger individual and a better person," he said in the statement. "I look forward to continuing on this path."
Smith faced a maximum sentence of four years and four months in jail for three felony counts of possessing assault rifles. But legal experts said it would not be unusual given his lack of a criminal record for a judge to knock them down to misdemeanors, impose a shorter sentence of weekend work and put him on probation. Smith was arrested in Miami once on suspicion of drunken driving, but that incident was knocked down to an infraction.
Smith had been scheduled for sentencing July 25, but the District Attorney's Office requested that the sentencing be moved up because of a family emergency with the prosecutor.
Smith kept a positive profile in public lately. He's done community work with the Boys & Girls Club, headlined a charity basketball game between 49ers and Raiders (he played only in the final minute) and attended Saturday's flag-football game at Candlestick Park between former 49ers and other NFL legends.
"Hopefully this will give him an opportunity to slow down," Thurston Smith, the linebacker's father, said in an exclusive telephone interview afterward. "With his maturity level, he turns 25 in September, I pray he settles down and realizes people that love him and are in his corner, now more than ever."
  • The 49ers placed nose tackle Ian Williams on the active/physically unable to perform list. Williams entered last season as the starter but suffered a broken ankle in Week 2 and missed the rest of the season. Glenn Dorsey is now the starter.

NYPD Choke-holds Staten Island man to death

A Staten Island man dies after NYPD cop puts him in choke hold

A 400-pound asthmatic Staten Island dad died Thursday after a cop put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against the sidewalk, video of the incident shows.

The entire incident was caught on video from a witness who kept telling the cops that the man had not committed a crime. But evidently, the cops suspected him of selling untaxed cigarettes, which apparently is a very serious crime in New York City.

“Esaw Garner holds a photo of her late husband with sons Emery (left) and Eric.”

"When I kissed my husband this morning, I never thought it would be for the last time," Garner's wife, Esaw, said.
She got no details from police until after she had gone to the hospital to identify his body, she said.
“They’re covering their asses, he was breaking up a fight,” Garner’s mother said
. “They harassed and harassed my husband until they killed him. Garner’s family said he didn’t have any cigarettes on him or in his car at the time of his death.
The man complained on video shot by 22-year-old Ramsey Orta that he was tired of being harassed by police officers.

Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, ceased struggling and appeared to become unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. An angry crowd gathered, some recording with smart phones.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Amid calls of police brutality and racism from witnesses and social media users, law enforcement sources maintain that the man who died following an incident with police in Tompkinsville on Thursday afternoon "absolutely resisted arrest" prior to his death.

The man, identified by police as Eric Garner, 43, of Bond Street in Port Richmond, was pronounced dead at Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, following the incident, which took place at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Bay Street at about 4:45 p.m.

Witnesses say Garner was trying to break up a fight in front of a beauty supply store on the corner of Bay and Victory. Garner, who was taller than 6 feet and weighed at least 350 pounds, was a fixture in the neighborhood who often sold loose cigarettes for 50 cents each.

The incident sparked calls of police brutality as residents hung handwritten posters with phrases like "no justice, no peace" and "Another innocent black man has been killed by police brutality. The NYPD must be stopped!" on telephone poles near the scene about an hour after the incident.

CEO Rivers to quit Clippers if Sterling stays

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers testified Tuesday that coach Doc Rivers told him he will quit if Donald Sterling remains the owner of the team.

CEO Richard Parsons made the statement at the trial to determine whether Sterling's wife Shelly Sterling can sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

The NBA has tried to force out Donald Sterling since soon after racist statements emerged on recordings in April.

"Doc is troubled by this maybe moreso than anybody else," Parsons said on the witness stand about Rivers, who is black. "If Mr. Sterling continues as owner, he does not want to continue as coach."

Parsons said he fears there would also be an exodus of key players, including team captain Chris Paul, who also is black and heads the NBA players union.

Parsons was about to give an account of his conversations with Paul but was stopped by an objection by an NBA lawyer who said it would be an invasion of privacy. The judge upheld the objection.

Rivers has said he had heard from other Clippers business employees that they didn't think they would be able to work for Sterling under the circumstances.

Parsons is a former chief executive at Time Warner and Citigroup who took over leadership of the Clippers in May during the media blitz surrounding the banishment of Sterling.

Under questioning by Ballmer's lawyer, Parsons said the departure of Rivers would begin "a death spiral" for the Clippers.

"If Doc were to leave, that would be a disaster," Parsons said. "Doc is the father figure, the one who leads. He's the coach. He's the grown-up. He is able to connect with people and earn their trust. The team believes in him and loves him.

"If he were to leave, that is only going to accelerate the death spiral," Parson said.

Parsons, who is considered an expert in the management of major corporations, said he was certain that sponsors
would pull out and season ticket holders would demand their money back if Donald Sterling remains as owner.

"If your coach leaves, if your players don't want to play with you, what do you have?" Parsons asked. "If your sponsors leave and the fans leave, it's going to spiral down and down."

He said key sponsors such as Mandalay Bay Resorts in Las Vegas are cold about whether they will continue, as are other companies including Kia Motors Corp.

"We have a bunch of sponsors sitting at the edge of the pool and they don't want to go in if the Sterlings are there," Parsons said.

Parsons also said he doesn't believe that anyone will offer as much money for the team as Ballmer.

Shelly Sterling also was on the witness list Tuesday along with Dean Bonham, an expert on sponsorship and marketing issues who is also the president of an NBA franchise.

The high-stakes financial fight centers on whether Shelly Sterling was authorized to make a deal with Ballmer on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust.

While she was negotiating, Donald Sterling revoked the trust, a move designed to rescind his signed agreement for the sale of the Clippers, which he bought for just $12 million.

He announced from the witness stand earlier in the trial that he would never sell the team and would be suing the NBA for the rest of his life.

    Hollywood's Highest Paid Actors 2014

Hollywood is increasingly in the business of making movies with disposable actors — performers who are almost interchangeable and easily replaced. The special effects and bombastic action sequences required for the modern blockbuster cost many millions of dollars. Any money studios can save by casting less-famous actors is money that can go to the bottom line. And if those actors can be easily swapped out in sequels, all the better. A disposable actor doesn’t really have the leverage to demand a big pay hike.
If there’s one actor who has proved himself in-disposable, it’s Robert Downey Jr. The actor has made millions playing Iron Man and for the second year in a row, he tops FORBES’ list of the Top Earning Actors. We estimate that Downey earned $75 million between June 2013 and June 2014, the same amount as he earned last year. This list measures only the men. We will have a separate list of the Top Earning Actresses.
Downey reigns as the highest paid man in Hollywood because at this point, it would be incredibly difficult for Marvel to continue making Iron Man andAvengers films without him. Marvel movies starring Downey have earned almost $4 billion at the global box office and millions more on home video, not to mention the millions the movies have generated in merchandise.
Rounding out our top five are:
This list looks at estimated earnings between June 2013 and June 2014.

    Robert Downey, Jr.

    $75 million
Marvel has been accused of being stingy when it comes to paying the stars of its blockbuster superhero movies. But the studio (owned by Disney) is plenty generous when it comes to Downey. As Iron Man, he's been the driving force behind four of Marvel's biggest hits, including "The Avengers" which is the third highest-grossing movie of all time. He played hard to get with the upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and was rewarded with a big pay hike. Most of Downey's money this year comes from the backend of "Iron Man 3" which was the highest-grossing movie of 2013 with $1.2 billion in box office revenue.
Disney, which owns Marvel, wants to keep that gravy train going for as long as it can and like it or not, that means paying Downey whatever he demands. The actor coyly held out during negotiations for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and secured more money than ever upfront for the film. The movie is sure to be a huge hit and he’ll earn even more on the back end.
Downey’s Hollywood clout (he ranks 10th overall on our Celebrity 100 list which measures a mix of money and fame) has given him the power to get smaller, more personal movies made too. He helped his friend Jon Favreau get the film Chef produced and appeared in a memorable cameo in the movie. Chef has earned $25 million so far at the global box office, not bad for a tiny film.
Downey isn’t the only superhero on our list this year. Newcomer Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, didn’t have the fame numbers to make it on the Celebrity 100 this year but he ranks 5th on our list of Top Earning Actors with $37 million. The Thor sequel, The Dark World, outearned the first Thormovie by $200 million so expect Hemsworth to be able to negotiate for more money in the inevitable  Thor 3. When he’s not playing a Norse God, Hemsworth is busy pursuing an Oscar. This year he’ll star in films by prestige directors Michael Mann and Ron Howard who directed Hemsworth in Rush.
To compile their earnings estimates, Forbes talked to agents, producers, lawyers and other in-the-know folks to figure out how much each celebrity earned from entertainment-related work between June 2013 and June 2014. They did not deduct for taxes, agent fees or the costs of being a celebrity.

    Dwayne Johnson

$52 million With ensemble movies like "G.I. Joe" and "Fast and Furious," Johnson has transcended his wrestling days to become a true movie star. Now he's graduated to leading man. With "Hercules" and 2015's earthquake disaster film "San Andreas," The Rock is carrying movies on his sizable shoulders. A smart businessman, he's also branching out into TV. "The Hero" was his first stab at reality TV. Now he's moving up to the big leagues with the HBO comedy "Ballers." Johnson is executive producing and starring in the comedy about a group of football players.

    Leonardo DiCaprio

$39 million It's hard to imagine now, but "The Wolf of Wall Street" was a risk for DiCaprio. The actor had to agree to cut his upfront fee in order to get the Martin Scorsese film made. Five Oscar nominations (including for Best Actor) and $395 million later, it looks like "Wolf" was yet another good bet for the actor. DiCaprio excels at turning adult movies into box office hits. His other triumph this year was "The Great Gatsby." A surprise hit, "Gatsby" earned $351 million at the global box office.

    Chris Hemsworth  $37 million

The actor category is one of the toughest on the Celebrity 100 and despite earning millions, Hemsworth just failed to make the cut. The "Thor" star isn't resting on his Marvel laurels. Look for him in movies like the upcoming "Cyber" about high-level hacking.

    Liam Neeson $36 million
When Hollywood needs an actor with a certain set of skills, they turn to Neeson. With "Taken 3" on the horizon, Neeson still makes plenty of money. He just didn't have the fame numbers to rank on our Celebrity 100 this year.

    Ben Affleck $35 million

Poor Ben Affleck. When Warner Bros. announced that the actor would be stepping into Batman's famous shoes, the Internet turned against him heckling the actor as completely unworthy of the role most lately made famous by Christian Bale. But Affleck might have the last laugh. He's collected a huge paycheck for the upcoming movie and could have steady work for years to come as Warner Bros. gives D.C. Comics the Marvel treatment with multiple movies lined up over the next five years.

    Christian Bale $35 million

Bale has successfully moved on from playing Batman. He earned his second Oscar nomination this year for "American Hustle" and up next he's playing Moses in a big-budget version of the Bible tale -- "Exodus" from director Ridley Scott.

    Will Smith $32 million

Studios still pay Will Smith top dollar to star in their blockbusters because even when he misfires, he still brings in a huge fan base. Smith's latest film, "After Earth," barely registered in the U.S. earning only $60 million. But it did better overseas bringing in $183 million or 75% of its total global box office. Smith's most recent passion project is a new big-screen version of "Annie" starring African-American actors in many of the key roles. He produced the film with Jay-Z.

    Mark Wahlberg

    $32 million
Wahlberg is still collecting money from 2012's "Ted." The raunchy comedy earned $550 million in theaters on a $50 million budget. This year he showed his more serious side with "Lone Survivor." The $40 million movie brought in a healthy $150 million at the global box office. In addition to his movie work, Wahlberg has a thriving career as a TV producer. His company produced "Entourage" (soon to hit the big screen) and "Boardwalk Empire" on HBO. Now he's backing his "Pain and Gain" costar Dwayne Johnson with the football comedy "Ballers."

Legendary just teased a new King Kong movie at Comic-Con International with "Skull Island" and announced a release date
Forget the whole zombie/vampire movie craze, Hollywood is heading in a new director… The past! Tinsel Town is gearing up to rehash classics, Tarzan and King Kong. First it was announced that Warner Brothers was working on a Tarzan sequel starring True Blood and The Giver’s Alexander Skarsgard. Now it has been announced that Legendary is taking us back to Skull Island in the new King Kong (we assume prequel) film.
Hollywood is a jungle, and Alexander Skarsgard is its new king. Now that True Blood is ending the actor is free to expand his resume. Skarsgard has just been cast as the lead in the upcoming Tarzan reboot.
    Like Us on Facebook
The new movie will skip Tarzan's well known origins, according to a plot synopsis provided
"It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash."
However, Tarzan might have to defend his crown against the mother of all contenders. King Kong is back and this time we are own his turf. Legendary films is planning a new movie based on Kong’s homeland, Skull Island.
The studio teased the new movie at Comic-Con, telling reporters:
“Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”
    The short teaser revealed:
An island is shown with various images of animals, including dinosaurs.
Narration can be heard stating it's very existence is improbable; being alone in the wilderness has driven it mad; we have penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness..."
Then King Kong is shown beating his chest and roaring, with it said Skull Island is coming November 4, 2016.

Dubai says it's launching project to build world's biggest mall [Video]

    Dubai says;

it’s building world’s biggest shopping mall

The Mall of the World will have climate-controlled street grid, 100 hotels and apartment buildings, covered theme park

The emirate’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, has laid out plans for a sprawling real-estate project, the Mall of the World, which will include an 8-million-square-foot mall, a climate-controlled street network, a theme park covered during the scorching summer months and 100 hotels and serviced apartments.
Dubai Holding, the company behind the project, says on its website that the mall will be the world's largest, but that claim could not be independently confirmed. By comparison, Minnesota's Mall of America, the largest in the United States, is 4.87 million square feet.
Plans for the project also include a cultural and theater district drawing inspiration from New York's Broadway, a shopping thoroughfare based on London's Oxford Street and a wellness district meant to attract medical tourists.
The complex will be built near the Mall of the Emirates, which has an indoor ski slope, and is a short drive from the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, and the adjacent Dubai Mall. That shopping center is currently the emirate's largest and features a dinosaur skeleton, an indoor ice-skating rink and a multistory aquarium.
"The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai's tourism infrastructure as soon as possible," Mohammed said Saturday in a statement announcing the plan. "This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the 2 billion people living in the region around us, and we are determined to achieve our vision."
Dubai Holding gave no details about the expected cost or completion date.
The emirate has long used high-profile, big-ticket real estate projects in attempt to drive economic growth and establish itself as an international tourist destination. Its ambitions were slowed by a financial crisis that came to a head in 2009, forcing the delay or cancellation of some of its more outlandish plans.
Dubai Holding was not spared from the financial turmoil, and some of its divisions sought new repayment terms from lenders on a debt pile that reached into the billions of dollars.
The emirate's economy has rebounded strongly in the years since the crisis, driven by trade, transportation and tourism.
Dubai is racing to develop additional infrastructure needed to accommodate a surge in visitors expected when it becomes the first Middle Eastern city to host the World Expo, in 2020. Authorities expect that event to generate $23 billion from 2015 to 2021 and estimate it will cost $8.4 billion to organize.
The new mall project alone is expected to create an additional 20,000 hotel rooms.

Homeless South Carolina man changing his life by singing for food

“WILL SANG 4 FOOD” THIS HOMELESS MAN CAN SING

The South Carolina man is really homeless and he does offer to sing for people for food.

If his new venture, which he has compiled into a series of online videos, leads to his dream

of being in the music business that’s great.

But if not, Byon Artrell McCullough, 28, said he’s happy that he has turned his life around
and is reaching people through his biggest passion.

“Am I homeless? Yes. Am I a bum? No,” he said.

No Cash, who was formerly known as Saga Cash is Byon Knowz stars in his latest video
that he made with his friend Felix Jordan.

No Cash said he developed his new persona after he finished serving three and a half years
in prison for drug charges. He and Jordan have been uploading videos over
the past year to showcase No Cash’s talent and give a positive image of a homeless person.

“I’m trying to show, if you show people you are trying to help yourself first, then people will
be more willing to give you help,” he said. “Homeless people are people, too.
Life does just happen, that can make people feel overwhelmed at times.
People should stop judging the homeless.

If you don’t have money to give them, try to give them some guidance and support.”

When No Cash was released from prison he decided to depart from his previous musical persona.
He said his guardians died while he was in jail,
and when he was released he had no job and nowhere to go.

“I came home to nothing,” he said. He has survived the past few years by staying with various family members and friends.
“I knew I couldn’t go back and hustle to make money anymore like I used to,” he said.
“I thought, ‘How can I make it in the music career with no money?’”

So No Cash decided on his new name and, instead of wearing fancy clothes, he would appear as simple as he could.
“I wanted him to be at the lowest point so people would pay attention for what it is, the music,” he said.
“People see him as tortured and not trying to sell you a dream.”

But soon after he started performing he realized he was becoming this new person that No Cash represented.
“I’m telling people I love music so much I’ll sing for you just for something to eat,” he said.
“I am able to render services for you for whatever you can give me. I’m trying to show,
if you show people you are trying to help yourself first, then people will be more willing to give you help.”

He sings “all day, every day,” he said. No Cash also said he recently got a job painting — his first job
in the past two and a half years since he was released from jail.

He said if his dreams in music don’t come true he at least wants to use his new employment to get his own
place and no longer be homeless.

“I don’t have a place to sleep, but I’m not complaining,” he said. “I do have several things going for me.
I do have good things in my life.”

Jordan, 25, told The News No Cash grew up singing in the church and sings all types of music.
Many of the people in his hometown of Florence all seem to know him, he said.

“He is the type of person people want to be around and help out,” he said.

Wu-Tang Clan Goes the Full Nine Rappers For ‘Daily Show’ Performance!

The Wu-Tang Clan has proved there’s greater strength in numbers as all nine members reunited ...
They debuted a new song "Ron O'neal" and spoke about re-uniting.

The entire Wu-Tang Clan — all nine living members and one ceremonial Ol' Dirty Bastard T-shirt — appeared on The Daily Show Wednesday night to perform new song "Ron O'Neal" and talk with Jon Stewart about reuniting the group for their new album, A Better Tomorrow

Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, GZA and an especially hype, mic-stand chucking RZA all grabbed the mic on "Ron O'Neal," but of course the rest of the group was on hand to keep the camaraderie alive. Along with the TV debut of "Ron O'Neal," the track is now available to download on iTunes.
Of course the big question surrounding the Wu-Tang reunion for A Better Tomorrow was the presence of Raekwon, who went on strike from the group after hitting a creative impasse with RZA. ("I'm not happy with the direction of the music and I’m not happy with how dudes is treating dudes’ business," he told Rolling Stone in April. "If it don’t feel right, I can’t be fake.") But the Chef himself addressed the holdout and eventual reconciliation.
"We trailblazers in the music business, we been around the world, we doing our job. I consider this a sport," Raekwon said. "I think it's important as an athlete of music to make sure that you've got your business together, make sure you feel happy in whatever you want to do. You just want to feel good about it and at the end of the day you've gotta have your i's dotted and your t's crossed in business, because we have families. We go out there and work for our families, so if I'm not gonna see my children and I'm out here doing a job, I think it's important for me to go out there and do what I say I'm going to do, get back home to them and then hit up Disneyland."
Elsewhere, the illustrious, sometimes elusive Ghostface Killah spoke about dropping everything when the Wu-Tang call comes and even making sacrifices here and there: "This is my life right here, me and Abbott [RZA], this is my brotherhood, so we've been tight since day one. Soon as he said, 'We coming back to do A Better Tomorrow,' I'm always with it. I'm the one that likes for everything to be right, you know, from the stage show to the wardrobes and everything and everybody be on point. If one thing is off, it throws me off. But for the team — I'll take one for the team. And I'll continue. I don't got a problem with that."
As for the new record itself, RZA spoke about what the LP means as a whole, and what it means for the group as an entity, saying, "I think we all started for a better tomorrow. Wu-Tang, we have something in common with each other — a brotherhood, a respect. And when we said 'a better tomorrow,' we're starting to make a better tomorrow for ourselves, but also to inspire a better tomorrow for the world."
Wu-Tang Clan also closed out the show with a performance of their legendary posse cut, "Triumph," and Stewart's extended interview with the group is also available to watch online.
A Better Tomorrow is scheduled to see release in November, though an official date has yet to be announced. The group is also prepping a ridiculous "secret album," The Wu - Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a 31-track effort of which they'll only sell a single copy (RZA claims to have already gotten offers of $5 million for the lone pressing). Of course, since Wu-Tang is for the children, the group will bring the album to the masses through a tour of the world's museums, galleries and festivals. The album also features two out-of-nowhere vocal spots from Cher.

10 Best Music BiopicsThe 11 Best Music Biopics of All Time (Says Us)

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in ‘Walk the Line’/Image © Twentieth Century Fox
Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in ‘Walk the Line’/Image © Twentieth Century Fox

The problem with music biopics is we're dealing with rockstars - people who became famous because no one in the world was like them. Their life trajectory may be remarkably and even monotonously consistent - the humble beginnings, the how-they-got-discovered fable, the fact that the exact over-the-top outrageousness that made them a success became their undoing - but what's unique is their charisma. So trying to emulate these one-of-a-kind musicians is like putting a backup singer at the lead singer's mic and expecting no one to mind. All too often, the best we can say about a music biopic is what we say about films like "Ray,""The Buddy Holly Story," and now "Get on Up": The actor did a good impression. Talk about damning with faint praise."Get on Up," the music biopic about the late, great James Brown, does not live up to its subject. Sure, Chadwick Boseman ("42") embodies the Godfather of Soul with enough super-bad splendor that he'll likely nab the Oscar nod that Hollywood loves to bestow upon actors who portray musicians. But the truth is that, in these 138 minutes of highly selective, highly redundant flashbacks, papa's got a brand-new mixed bag.

Worse, filmmakers tend to take a very conventional, even soapy approach to these extremely unconventional people's lives. As Grantland's Steven Hyden points out, most music biopics "insert the idea of a famous icon into a classic melodrama story line. It's like making 'Terms of Endearment' about 'Batman.'" To be fair, films about musicians face the same challenges as all biopics do: Stick too closely to the real arc of a person's life and get bogged down; take too many liberties and disappoint the literalists.
But the real trick to a successful music biopic may be to get as un-literal as possible. After all, some of the best ones ever made are not even technically biopics. "Purple Rain" and "8 Mile," for example, are fictional features based on the rock stars (Prince and Eminem, respectively) who star in them, and everyone's secret favorite, "Eddie and the Cruisers," is about a beloved rock and roller who never even existed. These films work because music is about a moment as much as it's about a person. More than anything else, music is a cultural zeitgeist, and we shouldn't invoke such zeitgeists without the same level of innovation as that which created them in the first place.
Without further fanfare, then, here's a completely biased, totally subjective list of the top eleven music biopics. (Consider that number an homage to the best music biopic never made, Rob Reiner's classic mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap.")

    "Bird" (1988)
Though Clint Eastwood's recent directorial efforts have proved increasingly soulless, his 1988 biopic about Charlie Parker is anything but - possibly because the helmer is such a jazz enthusiast that he even composes and plays the music in his alleged downtime. Sure, the film cleaves to the traditional biopic structure but it takes its aesthetic cues from the mood-indigo impressionism of the legendary saxophonist. And as Bird, a young Forest Whitaker established once and for all that he could carry anything on his strapping shoulders.
    "Amadeus" (1984)
The best music biopics often focus on a phenomenon rather than the musician itself. This Oscar-winning 1984 extravaganza about the fraught relationship between Mozart (Tom Hulce) and that lesser talent Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) conveys the elusive nature of genius and jealousy in dizzying gales of glory and despair. And leave it to director Milos Forman to (accurately) portray the revered classical composer as the world's first punk rocker.
    "A Hard Day's Night" (1964)
While one could argue that Richard Lester's 1964 scripted film about the Beatles is a documentary since it actually stars The Fab Four, this days-in-the-life feature is so stylized and wonderfully winky that it feels like fiction in the very best of ways. Shot in crisp black and white, it's really about the freedom of youth back when people really believed the future was bright.
    "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980)
Sure, this 1980 rags-to-riches story about country singer Loretta Lynn is about as orthodox as they come. But its overearnestness - as well as Sissy Spacek's heartbreaking, Oscar-winning performance as Lynn - serves to build out a terrific mid-century time capsule of hopes and dreams in rural, working-class America.
    "Sid & Nancy" (1986)
Talk about a time capsule. Alex Cox's 1986 account of the wild, and wildly ill-fated, love affair between Sex Pistols singer Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) and the ravishingly ravaged Nancy Spungen (Chloe Webb) doesn't just capture punk rock. It is punk rock, and it's got the broken bones and gallows humor to prove it. Bonus: a cameo from a very young Courtney Love.

"What's Love Got to Do With It?" (1993)
About the abusive relationship between Ike and Tina Turner, this music biopic largely draws on the latter's bestselling biography and so works as much like a female liberation anthem as any of her best solo singles do. Brian Gibson's direction might've been strictly middle-of-the-road but nobody could put this baby in a corner - especially not with the tremendous Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne portraying the R&B duo.

    "Notorious" (2009)
Begin with the fact that this chronicle of Brooklyn's favorite dead rapper is narrated by Brooklyn's favorite dead rapper from beyond the grave (don't ask me to explain the metaphysical mechanisms of that feat), and we've got a sense of how "Notorious" subverts the conventions of this film genre. Rapper Jamal Woolard brings the teddy bear as well as the talent that defines Biggie, and director George Tillman Jr. nails the particular panache and innocence of the 1980s and 1990s hip-hop scene.
    "24 Hour Party People" (2002)
Rarely has there been a more ideal combination of subject, director, and actor. About the 1990s "Madchester" music scene - including Joy Division, the Happy Mondays, and New Order - this stars Steve Coogan as Factory Records executive Tony Wilson. Helmed by Coogan's longtime partner in comedy crime, Michael Winterbottom, the film is as terrifically anarchic as its subject matter. If it's possible for a film to wear a shit-eating grin, this one does.
    "Walk the Line" (2005)
James Mangold's rich, sepia-toned Johnny Cash movie is really about grown-up love in the face of failure and addiction. In other words, it's the very best kind of American story, and it features such outstanding performances from Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as his wife and bandmate June Carter Cash that we all fell in love with the musicians' relationship as well.
"Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" (1988)
Not a lot of people have seen Todd Haynes's legally fraught short about the deceased anorexic 1970s pop icon but everyone should. Peopled by Barbie dolls as a brilliant indictment of the impossible standards imposed upon female stars, it also indicts the limitations of the genre overall while never sacrificing the plaintive magic of Carpenter. This film is as clever as it is genuinely, wholly affecting.
    "I'm Not There" (2007)
Apparently Haynes is the reigning king of the music biopic because he directed this one as well. Starring the likes of Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Ben Whishaw, and Marcus Carl Franklin as various iterations of Bob Dylan, this genius catalog of aliases not only encapsulates the singer's notorious deconstruction of identity but also how the era we know as "the 1960s" really spans from Woody Guthrie's 1940s to the Vietnam War-era 1970s - and was arguably the last time we could show our love for this country by trying to change it.

50 Shades of Grey Trailer Review [VIDEO]

    SMART- POLITE- INTENSE- INTIMIDATING

Well, this isn’t going to end well for anyone. It’s been a couple of years in development hell but now, at long last, we can dust off our old 50 Shades puns and start all over again. Have you heard that Christian Grey was fired from his company after a salary scandal? There were 50 Grades of Pay. Apparently he went bankrupt and had to work on a farm to pay off his debts. He had to harvest 50 Bales Of Hay. After that, he had to be very frugal when it came to buying new bondage equipment. He had to be Thrifty Shades Of Grey.

    shades
But that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here because the first global trailer has been released, and we owe it to you and ourselves to take a closer look and make a few guesses about the final 50 Shades of Grey movie, when it’s released in 2015. On Valentine’s Day. Yeah, perfect first date material.
Here’s the trailer, just in case you’ve been trapped in an elevator for the past week and missed it. In fact, if you have been trapped in an elevator for a week, you’ll feel right at home with this trailer. Elevators feature quite heavily.
And there we have it. 2 minutes and 20 seconds of women looking nervous in elevators and men looking absently out of windows. And a dinner scene with the in-laws. Raunchy stuff.
    Let’s recap what we’ve seen.
We meet Ana Steele straight off the bat, looking like the unlikely offspring of Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada and Zooey Deschanel in everything Zooey Deschanel has ever been in.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-28-23h25m16s93
    “Man, elevators are boring.”
Anastasia has a couple of questions for Mr. Grey, so she wanders into his reception – which is apparently staffed entirely by Aryan Fembots from the future.
"Mr. Grey will see you nowERROR 404 DOES NOT COMPUTE"
“Mr. Grey will see you now ERROR 404 DOES NOT COMPUTE KILL ALL HUMANS”
Grey Enterprises Holdings Ltd’s reception area reminds us of this scene from Tron: Legacy.
    TRON GIRLS
Oh, and we never noticed this before, but… Grey Enterprises Holdings Ltd? Not exactly catchy, is it?
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h07m27s52
“Hello and thank you for calling Grey Global International Enterprises Conglomerated Holdings Limited Incorporated, how may I direct your call?”
And soon, Ana is led meekly into Grey’s office. He stands, looking intensely out of the window. This is another recurring theme with Mr. Grey: Ana has her elevators, Christian has his windows.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h08m02s171
“Look how intense my back is! Oh hey, the office opposite mine has nice windows. Jeeves, fetch me my catapult.”
Then the trailer teases us with shot after shot of out of focus Grey’s…
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h08m50s137
“Did you notice how intense my middle finger is? It’s pretty intense.”
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h09m08s46
“My hand is so intense that I could probably snap this table if I wanted to.”
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h09m25s230
“The back of my head is so intense it should come with a warning label.”
And then… BOOM. Moneyshot. You have to hand it to them, after auditioning just about every man in Hollywood, the final Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) is pretty on point – maybe because there’s just a hint of Colin Firth about him.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h11m08s244
“If you thought the back of my head was intense, look at the front of it.”
Obviously, Ana is thunderstruck straight away, as you can tell from this shot of her getting into an elevator.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h10m38s193
“Hmm… maybe my next big story should be Elevator Interiors Of The Rich And Famous?”
And before you know it, Cristian is trying to suck Ana’s eyes out. In an elevator.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h11m41s46
    “Sorry Anastasia, I tripped. Intensely.”
And the rest is history. There’s some other stuff in the trailer, for example this shot of Christian piloting a glider and very literally turning Ana’s world upside down, which is a bit heavy-handed for a trailer:
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h15m25s4
“I would throw up but I’m scared he might like it.”
Let’s get to the meat, to the good stuff. Expect to be seeing this picture on your Facebook feeds for the next three years:
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h13m58s151
“My nipples are SO intense right now.”
So what can we learn about the finished film from this trailer? Well, there’s good news, and there’s bad news. There’s not an inner goddess, an “oh my” or a “laters babe” anywhere in sight. Hurrah, that’s good news. And on the whole it seems like the filmmakers have done justice to the source material without just blindly following it. Take a look at the decor of Grey’s office:
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h08m20s74
(Notice Grey swearing at the camera again?)
The shattered sphere sculpture, the moody, listing ships, the chair deliberately chosen to make Anastasia look small, it’s all very clever scenery and it shows that, whatever the final movie is like, it’s going to be close in tone to the book.
Very promising. Also promising is the little glimpses we get of the Red Room and of the sex scenes.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h16m23s66
I wonder if the cuffs match the collar…
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h16m50s85
Nothing says ‘class’ like soundproof velour walls.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h17m33s0
This is how mimes practice. When they’re good, they can have kinky sex without the rope.
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h17m40s68
This is the face EVERYONE makes when they try to peel their naked body off a leather sofa.
On first impressions, then, the sex scenes look pretty good – as long as you consider the sex scenes in the book good, of course. They appear pretty accurate, relatively explicit, and created by people who know what they’re doing. In fact, we know that the filmmakers were experts, because they chose the LELO Intima silk blindfold. Christian Grey really DOES have class:
    vlcsnap-2014-07-29-08h14m14s55
    Good choice, sir. Good choice.
    But there’s a problem, and it’s that this scene…
    jamie-dornan-fifty-shades-of-grey-9
…reminds us so much of this scene…
    tumblr_md4tcrolxt1rxq80l
…that we simply can’t think about anything else now. And we wonder if we’re onto something here: judging from the trailer, is it possible that 50 Shades is in fact Bridget Jones’ Diary with all the humor taken out and all the sex left in?
We dare you to watch it again right now and not start drawing parallels with Bridget Jones. Double dare you.
Ah well, if that’s the case, we can live with it, mainly because the soundtrack of this trailer is outstanding. A completely reworked, stomping, sexy version of Crazy In Love, made exclusively for the movie. It’s brilliant.

    In Conclusion…

Whether you love the 50 Shades series or hate it, you can’t deny that one of the major outcomes was that it opened up conversations all over the world about sex. Every generation has its sexually-defining piece of media, 50 Shades is ours and whether it’s done more harm than good is still up for debate. But that’s part of the point: the fact that it’s generating debate at all is a progressive sign.
I guess we’ll have to reserve judgement for now. In the meantime…
